The pictures below were taken of the Kahu just prior to her decommissioning, as such some items pictured may not be included in the sale of the vessel. Purchasers are encouraged to inspect the vessels to ascertain condition and appointments. ![]() ![]() ![]() General Layout Bridge Deck The bridge deck comprises an aluminium wheelhouse, with the helm station placed forward most. A chart table is located immediately aft of the helm station adjacent is a communications station which sits opposite an administration desk. Port and starboard wheelhouse doors allow easy access to the bridge wings, which lead back to an open deck area aft of the wheelhouse which can also be accessed through the rear of the wheelhouse. This deck provides stowage for life rafts and has storage compartments for lifejackets, pyrotechnics and other miscellaneous equipment. Excellent all-round visibility is a feature of this decks layout. ![]() ![]() ![]() Main Deck (Accommodation) Access to the main deck from the bridge can be made either internally through the accommodation or via vertical ladders positioned on the port and starboard sides. The accommodation layout on this deck has a single berth with full ensuite forward which is currently assigned as the Captains cabin. A four berth cabin with ensuite is located on the starboard side. A laundry compartment and vestibule leading to the lower deck make up the rest of this decks layout. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Main Deck (Outside) The fore deck comprises an anchor windlass with a capstan head, access to the anchor locker and forward accommodation below. The aft deck has a number of fittings including a small derrick, capstan head and fuel stowage. Two hatches are located towards the stern which access the steering gear compartment and store/workshop areas below. A particular feature of the Kahu is her permanently mounted Divers Platform which allows ease of access to an from the water. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Lower Deck Accommodation Aft of the chain locker is an open 9 berth cabin that leads back on the Port side to a 3 berth cabin which features a full ensuite and work desk. Opposite this cabin on the Starboard side is a 2 berth cabin. Aft of the 2 berth cabin is a well sized ablution compartment for the use of the two cabins without ensuites. A recreation and dining area is located amidships which has a table with fitted seating surrounding it on two sides. Additional seating can be provided by chairs. This recreation area incorporates a small servery and in-built cabinetry for entertainment equipment and general storage. The adjacent galley facilities are suitably sized and fitted with commercial grade equipment to cater for a compliment of up to 19 crew. The galley was refitted in April 2008. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Engine Room The engine room is located aft of the lower deck accommodation and is accessed via a hatch on the main deck. In typical naval fashion this compartment is presented in excellent condition with all machinery and surfaces maintained to the usual high degree. The two Cummins main engines are located in the engine room and are situated to easily effect maintenance. All ancillary pumping systems are similarly maintained and are all located in the engine room. ![]() ![]() Generator Compartment The vessels generators and associated switchboard and battery banks are located in a separate compartment aft of the engine room. A watertight door separates the two. The Kahu recently had significant and comprehensive plant upgrades in this compartment due to flood damage see 2008 Refit for details. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Stores and Workshop Compartment The ships engineering store and workshop are located aft of the generator compartment. This space provides ample storage of equipment and can be accessed directly from the main deck above or through the generator compartment. ![]() Steering Gear Compartment The aft most section of the ship contains the steering gear compartment. An emergency hand steering arrangement is installed to supplement the main hydraulic system in the event of failure of the former. Additional storage shelving is located around the compartment.
